The Tinker Air Force Base’s Emerging Supervisor Development Program Class of 2019 were recognized for their accomplishments during a graduation ceremony held Sept. 11 at the Tinker Event Center Ballroom.

This year’s graduating class of 70 students completed more than 188 hours of the ESDP’s formal and experiential training that is focused on developing an understanding in the ESDP core competencies of communications, diversity, human relations, business management and leadership.

A keynote address on leadership styles and the importance of getting the most out of your team was presented by Kevin D. Stamey, executive director of the Air Force Sustainment Center, Air Force Materiel Command.

“You don’t get to handpick your team, you have to deal with the hand you’re dealt,” Stamey said. “The only way you’re going to be successful as a leader is if you learn how to get the best out of your group. Not everyone is a superstar but it doesn’t mean everyone can’t contribute to the mission. Your challenge as a supervisor is getting the most out of everyone.”

A highly competitive program, ESDP uses its comprehensive curriculum to address these and other issues that Stamey said are vital to successful leadership both at Tinker and elsewhere.

Stamey said that while there are multiple leadership styles that can help supervisors achieve this goal, toxic leadership styles will fail to return positive results from any member of a group.

“It might have been acceptable in the Air Force years ago, but it isn’t now” Stamey said. “I try to tell everyone that if we still have toxic leaders in our Air Force, it’s your job to identify those people and we need to have a serious conversation, because this is not a style that works well in the workplace.”

The goal of the program itself is to help aspiring supervisors display the highest potential in positions of leadership. Since 2010, there have been 729 ESDP graduates and these ESDP alumni fill more than 220 supervisory positions across the base.

“You will essentially be the culture of this organization,” Stamey said. “I can talk all day, but when it comes down to it, it comes down to how you take what you’ve learned. Because the culture will go the way you go.”
