TINKER LIBRARY

TINKER AIR FORCE BASE -- This week in history: Tuskegee Airmen activated, March 22, 1941.
The highly decorated and pioneering African-American aviation unit received its nickname from the airfield where they trained in Tuskegee, Ala. They were activated as the 99th Pursuit Squadron and later formed the 332nd Fighter Group. These skilled pilots flew the P-39, P-40, P-47 and P-51 aircraft. The unit is most famous for being the only unit that never lost a U.S. bomber during escort missions. To learn more about the Tuskegee Airmen, visit the Tinker Library for a DVD, video or book.
