Twenty-nine players tested their skills vying for the title of 2007 Tinker intramural tennis champion Sept. 22.
Thanh Alcorn won the over-35 age group and Rocky Vo captured the under-35 title.
"In this tournament, we had the most participants we have ever had," said Joseph Pettiford, fitness specialist at the Gerrity Fitness and Sports Center. "We had to use the Midwest City Regional Tennis center for some of our preliminary matches."
Alcorn cruised through the early rounds of the tournament with ease. His ground strokes and serving game were the determining factors in reaching the championship final.
"Alcorn's tennis game is very nice," said Kevin Grice. "He cuts the ball and adds a slice, making his shots very deceptive."
In the over-35 championship match, Alcorn defeated Ron Chiles 8-2.
"I felt my energy and my experience were the factors in gaining the title," Alcorn said. "The competition was fierce, but I am glad I have won the title for 2007."
The championship in the under-35 category came down to a fierce match between Vo and Ryan Conners.
The match was played in the afternoon under intense heat. Vo hit ground stroke after ground stroke to get the early advantage over his opponent. Conners fought back, but his unforced service errors enabled Vo to capture the title.
"The keys to victory for me today were being able to stay focused, being on task and taking every point as if it was a championship point," said Vo.
