TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. --   Reserve Gold edged the Gym Rats, 21-19, Tuesday evening. A safety on the last play of the first half proved to be decisive, and an interception on the last play of the game sealed the victory.

In other base flag football games Tuesday, SCW1 clobbered ACNS, 37-19; the Med Group put the Iron Men in ICU, 41-13; and Reserve White romped over Reserve Red, 30-6.

The Gold-Rats game see-sawed back and forth repeatedly.

On Reserve Gold's first possession, passes from quarterback Randy Schell to Larry Mansell and Mike Rosenthal advanced the Airmen to the Gym Rats' 30-yard line, but on fourth down Schell was sacked by Brandon Newhouse at the Rats' 38.

Rats QB Cody Brooks capitalized on the turnover, lobbing a touchdown pass to Elbert Craig Jr. in the end zone. Although the PAT failed, the Gym Rats led, 6-0.

Gold quickly countered with a lateral from Schell to Brian Van Curen, who heaved a TD pass to Tom Carter, tying the score at 6-6. Schell's PAT pass to Rosenthal was broken up by Brooks.

The Rats raced downfield again on a 25-yard pass reception by Craig, a 20-yard Brooks pass to Quincy Boles, a 21-yard reception by Taylor Lamar, and a quarterback keeper to the Gold 10. Guarded by Brian Armstrong, Brooks tossed a TD pass to Lamar that put the Rats back in the lead, 12-6. Mansell intercepted the PAT pass attempt.

Reserve Gold stalled and the Gym Rats mounted another drive, until Brandon Thompson intercepted a Brooks pass and lateraled to Rosenthal, who was stopped at the Rats' 38-yard line. In turn, a Schell pass to Brett Nims was promptly intercepted in the end zone by Craig.

The Gym Rats took over on their 5, but Van Curen sacked Brooks for a safety, raising the score to 12-8 and ending the first half.

On the Gym Rats' first possession of the second half, Brooks was intercepted by Rosenthal, giving Reserve Gold first down at the Rats' 39-yard line. A pass to Rosenthal added 30 yards, Schell scampered into the end zone for a Gold TD, and the PAT pass to Thompson was good. Gold had the lead for the first time, 15-12.

Brooks launched a 57-yard pass to James Callins that moved the Gym Rats to the Gold 18. Brooks then dashed into the end zone for another Gym Rats score, and Boles snagged the PAT pass. As the third quarter ended, the Gym Rats led again, 19-15.

Facing fourth down at their own 30, Gold picked up 27 yards and a first down on a pass from Schell to Mansell, and a 26-yard pass reception by Rosenthal had Gold at the Rats' 1-yard line. Schell lobbed a TD aerial to Nims that put Gold back in front, 21-19. The PAT pass attempt fell incomplete.

The Gym Rats mounted a furious offense and proceeded from their 5 to the Reserve Gold 36, but Thompson intercepted a Brooks pass to end the drive and the game.

Reserve Gold and the Gym Rats are tied at 3-2 on the season. The Med Group, SCW1 and Reserve White are all 4-1. Reserve Red fell to 2-3, and ACNS and the Iron Men both are 0-5 this season.

Round 1 of double-elimination playoffs start next Tuesday and all teams are in, regardless of the regular-season standings, base Flag Football Commissioner Ralph Hawkins said Wednesday.
