Smooth sailing: Dozens take to the water for annual boat regatta
Tinker AFB, Okla. --
Twenty-six seafaring vessels took to the water Aug. 6 in Outdoor Recreation's 11th annual Cardboard Boat Regatta at Gerrity Pool.
Youth and adults alike set sail in boats made out of cardboard and duct tape. Each team had a captain and first mate and competed for first through third place cash prizes in two categories. Cash prizes were also awarded to the best dressed team and the best looking boat. A Titanic award was given to the duo with the best sinking.
Winners in this year's event are:
Best Dressed -- Genelle Hudson, 13, and Madeline Curry, 9;
Best Looking Boat -- "Git R' Dun" with Frank Volpe and Scott Kilgore
Titanic Award -- "Truffle Shuffle" with His Majesty Adam Hillyer and Her Majesty Megan Hatfield.
Adult category:
First place, with a time of 100.16, went to the "USS Thunderbird" with Terry DeMoe and Joanna Demoe. "Gator" with Gabe Volpe, 11, and Joelle Volpe took second in 104.06. In third place, was "Git R' Dun" in a time of 112.68.
Tadpole category:
Finishing in first place was "Hang 10" piloted by Kayleigh, 8, and Grace Dansuck, 6. In second place was "The Rafter" with Genelle Hudson and Madeline Curry and third place - "Knot Sing King Jr." with King Kade - Rock and Perry Amazing - Roll.
