VQ-7 routs 72nd CONS, looks to playoffs

In a league that seems to thrive on a good blow out, Thursday night's game was no exception. It was 26-0 with only two quarters of football played, with the scales tipped in VQ-7's favor. The championship hopefuls -- who fell to the Gym Rats in last year's championship game -- looked good against the 72nd CONS team from start to finish in their 26-8 victory.

Janai Holcomb was under center for VQ-7 during the Nov. 19 game, and he went about his business like a combat surgeon -- improvising when necessary, but getting it done at all cost. With only a few minutes played in the first quarter, VQ-7 receiver Nate Ferraro marched into the end zone to start a rally of 26 unanswered points. His 30-yard touchdown reception ignited the fire that would quickly spread.

But Ferraro wasn't done. Only minutes later he hauled in another 30-yard heave from Holcomb to put the black-shirted troupe up 12-0. Not even the missed two-point conversion or biffed PAT could get VQ-7 down.

Jerrel Frazier was up next, entering stage wide right as the receiver pulled down a 45-yard pass from Holcomb and marched it in for another six points. And then -- Holcomb made it rain.

On a freakish quarterback scramble play, Holcomb did what few flag football quarterbacks have done: run it in for a touchdown -- from 60 yards out.

With whirling jukes and breakaway speed on tap, Holcomb practically stuck a fork in the 72nd CONS defense, and it wasn't even halftime.

It was Joe Collins who grabbed the two-point conversion pass following Holcomb's romp, and the score rested fatly at 26-0 in VQ-7's favor.

For such an explosive first half, the second half was relatively quiet. Ferraro showed his defensive stuff as he picked off 72nd CONS quarterback Jason Brown on his first drive of the third quarter.

VQ-7 had possession several more times in the half but it was 72nd CONS who notched the only score. Brown connected on a 45-yard Hail Mary to Phil Olson late in the fourth quarter, and Micah Vickers caught the two-point conversion pass on the next play.

VQ-7 improved to 5-1 as 72nd CONS fell to 3-4 on the season.

Holcomb said his team is eyeing the playoffs, which begin the week after Thanksgiving, and a championship trophy.

"Hopefully we'll come home with it all," Holcomb said. And it seems his squad has the speed and talent to do it.
