New Tinker Base Exchange General Manager Bettye Golson traded in her boots and blue jeans for suits and heels.
The 31-year Army and Air Force Exchange Service veteran recently returned from a voluntary deployment to the Middle East including Kuwait, Qatar, Djibouti and the United Arab Emirates before taking the position at Tinker on Sept. 10.
Although she said being downrange and working with the Armed Forces and AAFES associates from all over the globe was very rewarding, she looks forward to her assignment at Tinker.
"It's been wonderful here. I was pleasantly surprised. Everyone is so friendly and it's a beautiful store," Ms. Golson said.
She said what she enjoys most about her tenured AAFES career is the day-to-day operations.
"It's something new everyday. We have a diverse customer base of all branches of the military and their spouses. It's always something different," she said.
The AAFES team plans on improving the level of customer service by providing new merchandise and creating excitement for the customers throughout the year, she said. Ms. Golson began her career with AAFES in 1976 as a clerk typist. She said it was at this level that her manager inspired her.
"She had goals for each clerk. She always told us to be the best that we can be," she said. Since then, the Montgomery, Ala. native has served at various levels of management within the company.
