TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- For decades, the Air Force Assistance Fund has raised funds to support our Air Force families in need. The AFAF has made a difference in the lives of our Airmen and their families and will continue to do so in the years to come because of one important element – YOU! Each year men and women from across the Air Force make a commitment to carry on the great legacy of taking care of our Air Force family (active duty, retirees, reservists, guard, dependents, and surviving spouses), and the men and women of Tinker AFB have an opportunity to continue this legacy and make a difference.
The AFAF has four affiliate charities that benefit from the generous contributions that are given each year. Since 1975, the Air Force Enlisted Village has provided a “safe, dignified and caring community” to the widows of enlisted Air Force members. Each year more than $1 million in contributions provide a lifetime of care and sustainment for the residents of the AFEV.
The LeMay Foundation provides grants to the surviving spouses of enlisted and officer retirees. This foundation believes that the surviving spouses are entitled a “dignified lifestyle” for the service they provided along with their spouses. Monthly grants supplement incomes falling below the poverty line. Last year, the LeMay Foundation provided nearly $600,000 in grants.
Another affiliate charity is the Air Force Villages Charitable Foundation, which provides a safe and comfortably modest lifestyle with access to long-term health care to surviving spouses. Since 1970, active duty members have provided over $17.5 million to the AFVCF.
For our Airmen and their families who stand in need of immediate assistance, the Air Force Aid Society helps with unexpected or everyday expenses. From utility bills to securing airline tickets for emergency travel for funerals, the AFAS provides the relief our Airmen need. Right here at Tinker, more than $40,000 was used last year to assist our Airmen in crisis. Moreover, $20,000 in education grants was awarded to dependent children and spouses to pursue their college degrees.
The AFAF thrives and makes a difference because of your generosity. The support and assistance that is spread across the four affiliate charities is a direct reflection of your commitment to caring for those in need.
As the 44th annual AFAF campaign continues, your contributions will undoubtedly help support our Air Force families. The goal for Tinker is $75,475 and we believe this goal is achievable with your assistance. Our campaign here at Tinker has been extended to April 28 to maximize giving efforts.
If you would like more information about the AFAF or to contribute, contact your Unit Project Officer. Thank you for your efforts in ensuring this campaign’s success, and thank you for making a difference.
