The Air Force is taking a unique approach to gun safety through a new program called Time-Based Prevention.

TBP is an effort that promotes putting time and space between a person in distress and their access to lethal means.

Juan Flores, Tinker’s violence prevention integrator, said it is important that people store their weapons in gun safes, vaults or locked cabinets so they cannot be easily accessed by children or other unauthorized individuals.

“A locked gun cabinet is the best option to store a weapon,” Flores said. “But, if Airmen don’t have a cabinet or space for one, a gun lock is also an option.”

Through the TBP program, Tinker received 1,700 gun locks that are available to any personnel on base who has a weapon in their home.

“Using gun locks helps reduce unintentional accidents,” Flores said. “Locks should always be used on firearms, even when they are stored in a gun safe.”

Locks are available while supplies last. For more information, call Flores at 582-9848 or email juan.flores.2@us.af.mil.
