This coming Monday at 3 p.m., our nation will observe a quiet moment of remembrance to pause and reflect on those who gave their lives to protect and defend the United States of America.

It is one minute set aside each Memorial Day since 2000 to recalibrate our thoughts toward the warriors and their families who have suffered great sacrifice for all of us who enjoy the freedoms maintained through their actions.

As we carry on the responsibility of safeguarding our nation, all Airmen – active-duty, reservists and civilians – have the opportunity to honor those who came before us. Whatever activities your holiday weekend may hold, be sure to take a moment to remember the true meaning of the day.

Lastly, I encourage you to use this time to get some rest, be safe and return rejuvenated to take on this summer’s challenges.

I’m proud to be your teammate.

Lt. Gen. Gene Kirkland
