Airmen,

“Data will talk if you are willing to listen” –Jim Bergeson

Every day we make countless decisions in our daily lives. How do we use data to make decisions?

My summer additions to the Leadership Library, Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men, The Social Dilemma, and The Third Revolution, Xi Jinping, and the New Chinese State help answer that question.

Data is central to helping us drive and make decisions. It enables us to analyze the operating environment to assess trends and patterns in complex systems. Data is critical to gaining an information advantage against potential adversaries and is a hallmark of Joint All Domain Operations (JADO).

As you reflect on the ideas in Invisible Women and The Social Dilemma, consider how hidden data bias can unconsciously affect our decision-making, judgment, and reasoning and how robust data and analysis plays an important role in the design of our future Air Force through Action Order D. To transition from the Air Force we have to the Air Force We Need we must have data-backed analysis to support today’s hard resourcing choices to maintain our decisive advantage in the future.

Finally, as you read The Third Revolution, Xi Jinping, and the New Chinese State, think about “Big Data” within the context of competition with our potential adversaries. Understanding how competitors leverage information to promote their ambitions and conduct future warfare is a critical component of Action Order C.

You can find this media and more on my newly updated CSAF Leadership Library website

Sincerely,
CHARLES Q. BROWN, JR.
