White whips SCW1, Gold downs TRS Published March 8, 2013 By Mike W. Ray Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Reserve White, a perennial powerhouse in base flag football, pounded SCW1 Tuesday evening, 29-12, in the spring season opener, which was punctuated with four interceptions and a safety. The temperature at game time was 44 degrees, but the wind chill index was below freezing because of a 19 mph wind. In the next game, the 373rd Training Squadron received a 26-8 drubbing from Reserve Gold, runners-up for the base flag football title last spring, in a game that was disrupted twice by narcoleptic field lights. In two other games Tuesday night: the 33rd CBCS evaded Navy Security, 26-6; and the 72nd Med Group eviscerated the Navy Ironmen, 44-13. The Medics were the Tinker football champs last fall and runners-up in the spring and fall 2011 seasons. Reserve White vs SCW1 Reserve White scored on its first possession, when quarterback Jim Gasaway fired a 25-yard touchdown aerial to Ken Sarsycki. The point-after attempt failed but White led, 6-0. SCW1, too, tallied on its first possession. Quarterback Shawn Ballard lost 14 yards when sacked by White's Tom Carter, but responded with a TD pass to 6'7" receiver Chase Green. Although the PAT failed, the score was tied, 6-6. The Airmen tacked on 2 more points when Carter sacked Ballard for a safety. Both teams then traded possessions. Gasaway was intercepted by SCW1's George Mosley, but the Airmen subsequently took over on downs when a Ballard pass to receiver Mark Hearn fell incomplete. However, time quickly expired, with White ahead at halftime, 8-6. Early in the second half Gasaway was intercepted again, by Hearn, who lateraled to Mosley, who finally was stopped at the White 4-yard line. A Ballard pass to Green was broken up by White's Mike Rosenthal, but Ballard found Mosley in the end zone for another score. Again the PAT failed, but SCW1 led, 12-8. On their next possession, White steadily marched down the field. Gasaway passes to Chris Jackson, Adam Hawkins, Brett Nims and Sarsycki advanced the Airmen from their 5 to the Sailors' 32, and a quarterback scramble added 13 more yards. Gasaway tossed a TD pass to Jim Sherman in the right corner, then added 2 more on a conversion keeper. White regained the lead, 16-12. A Ballard pass to Mosley was broken up by Rosenthal, and the quarterback's next aerial was intercepted by Mike Templeman, who ran it back for a touchdown. A PAT pass to Hawkins raised the score to 23-12. Ballard was again intercepted, by Rosenthal, who was halted at the Sailors' 23. SCW1's Matt Nye sacked Gasaway for an 8-yard loss, but the quarterback gained 12 on a keeper, to SCW1's 19. From there, Gasaway fired a TD pass to Templeman, ending the scoring at 29-12. Reserve Gold vs. 373rd TRS The 373rd Training Squadron stalled on its first possession Tuesday night and "punted." Passes from Reserve Gold quarterback Ralph Hawkins to Jay Harris, Randy Schell and Clint Root, coupled with a 15-yard quarterback scramble, advanced Gold to the TRS 31-yard line. There, Hawkins fired a TD aerial to Rob Doty, followed by a PAT pass to John Brown. Gold led, 7-0. TRS quarterback Tyler Mathews tossed an 18-yard pass to Josh Higgins, and a pass to Eric Crotsley advanced the Vipers to the Gold 22-yard line. Mathews then found Chris Tayamen in the end zone, but the extra-point pass was incomplete. The Vipers were just one point behind, 7-6. Three consecutive passes from Hawkins to Root had Gold back on the scoreboard, but on his PAT attempt Hawkins was sacked by Viper Justin Hammer. Gold raised their lead to 13-6. After TRS ran three plays, the field lights shut off at 6:45 p.m. and remained off for 15 minutes. As the sky darkened, the Vipers "punted" on fourth down, and Gold advanced from their 5 to the TRS 16 before the clock ran out on the first half. At the opening of the second half -- with the lights back on -- Hammer promptly sacked Hawkins for a safety, narrowing the margin to 13-8. On the Training Squadron's next possession, Mathews was intercepted by Gold's Joe Jankas. Hawkins passes to Carter and Doty moved Gold from their 24 to the TRS 15, where Hawkins heaved a scoring pass to Root. The PAT failed but Gold raised its lead to 19-8. The Vipers stalled inside their red zone and tried to pick up enough yardage for a first down, but fell short, so Gold took over on downs at the TRS 16. Hawkins quickly threw a scoring strike to Schell followed by a PAT pass to Doty, ending the scoring at 26-8. The field lights shut off again at 7:15 p.m., and since it was late in the contest both sides agreed to declare the game over.
