Reserve White bombs Ironmen Published Oct. 12, 2012 By Mike W. Ray Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- What started as a defensive struggle became a rout, as Air Force Reserve White bombed the Navy VQ-3 Ironmen, 25-6, in a base flag football game that featured four interceptions. On the Navy's opening drive, a pass to receiver Shayne Hughes gained 13 yards and quarterback Michael Rankin scrambled to midfield, but a penalty pushed the Sailors back and a pass to Lance Paquette produced little. Consequently, the Ironmen went three-and-out. Passes from Reserve White quarterback Larry Mansell to Brett Nims, Jim Gasaway and Adam Hawkins, and a lateral to Mike Templeman, drove the Airmen to the Navy's 2-yard line. However, Ironman Victor Jean picked off a potential touchdown pass, and the Sailors took over at their 5. Three plays later, at the start of the second quarter, Mike Rosenthal intercepted a Navy pass and the Airmen went to work from the Sailors' 38-yard line. Three consecutive plays produced nothing, but on fourth down Gasaway made an over-the-shoulder catch of a Mansell pass in the end zone, and Templeman snared the PAT pass as well. Reserve White led, 7-0. On VQ-3's next possession, Rosenthal intercepted a Rankin pass at midfield, dodged defenders and lateraled to Templeman, who finally was stopped at the Navy's 10. An aerial to Ken Sarsycki moved White to the 1, and Jeremy Allen caught a TD pass. The point-after attempt was unsuccessful, but White had extended its lead to 13-0. VQ-3 gained 28 yards before Hawkins sacked Rankin to end the first half. Mansell opened the second half with a pass to Nims that put the Airmen at the Sailors' 14. A pass to Templeman produced another touchdown, giving White a 19-0 edge. After the Sailors and the Airmen exchanged punts, VQ-3 started from their 5. Rankin was intercepted again, this time by Gasaway, who dashed into the end zone for a 25-0 lead. The extra-point pass to Rosenthal was broken up by Jean. Lindsey Key, substituting at quarterback, tossed passes to Hughes that advanced the Ironmen 15 yards, and Jean raced down the left sideline into the end zone for VQ-3's lone score of the Oct. 4 game. The point-after try failed, but the Navy was on the scoreboard, 25-6. White made it just beyond midfield before time expired.
