In country star Carrie Underwood's latest hit, she sings, "There's not enough wind in Oklahoma to rip the nails out of the past." If taken literally, there is and Tinker experienced it the afternoon of Sept. 7.

A windstorm swept through at 66 knots causing damage to several on-base facilities. A fuel truck storage building on the southeast side of base and an administrative facility in the 38th Cyberspace Engineering Installation Group campus were hit the worst. Cleanup crews have begun making repairs.

"I was surprised by the damage, because the storm wasn't too bad over here at the north side of base. It was isolated to the southeast corner of the base," said Brad Beam, 72nd Air Base Wing Civil Engineer Directorate Programs Division chief. "Everything else was fine and handled by the shops, plus the Air Force Sustainment Center Contracting Directorate put in a really great effort."

The garage, which stores fuel trucks, had four doors blown off and three were damaged. Mr. Beam estimates the cost to fix all seven doors will hover around $120,000. Its work is scheduled to be finished by the end of October.

The administrative facility at the 38th CEIG campus had half of its roof torn off and the remainder of it damaged.

Mr. Beam said contracting personnel were able to secure a contract to repair the roof just two business days after the storm. Since the windstorm, the contractor put on a temporary roofing membrane before the following week's rains arrived. The roof is expected to be completed by March 2013 and estimated to cost roughly $380,000.

While there was damage to personal vehicles parked near the building where the roof blew off, there were no reported injuries.
