The 33rd Combat Communications Squadron split a double-header in tight base basketball playoff games last Friday.

After a defensive scrap in which they edged the Bobbleheads by one point, the 33rd CBCS ran into foul trouble and out of fuel despite their deep bench, and lost by three to the shorthanded Flight Controllers #1.

The Bobbleheads led by two at the half, 15-13, but CBCS gradually pulled ahead and led by two until the Bobbleheads tied it at 26-all with 5:13 remaining in the game. CBCS regained the lead and was ahead by five with only 39 ticks left on the clock. The Bobbleheads sunk two more baskets, but CBCS played defensive keep-away just long enough to escape with a 34-33 victory.

Brandon Thompson with CBCS led all scorers with 10 points, and the 6'-4'' lieutenant grabbed 15 rebounds, too. Eric Wooten had 9 points for CBCS; Kenneth McLaurin and Constant Charlot, 4 each; Delbert Simmons, 3; Adrian Ross and Edward Tucker, 2 apiece. Other teammates were Olanrewaju Gamu, Kevin Clopp and Alan J. LeMay.

The leading scorer for the Bobbleheads was Roderick Ivory, with 9, followed by Richard Lewis, with 7; Joe Libid and John Powers had 5 each; Daniel Banks, 4; and Tyreek Bing, 3. Also playing was Josh Foster. Fellow teammate Brandon Savage was unable to make the game because he had to work that afternoon.

After a few minutes' breather, 33rd CBCS took the court again, this time to face the Flight Controllers #1. The Controllers had only four players at tipoff; two team members were benched by injuries.

Initially it appeared that a rout was in the making. The score was 13-0 CBCS, and four and one-half minutes had elapsed, before the Controllers finally sunk a basket.

At approximately that moment the Controllers' fifth member, player/coach Kelvin Kearney, arrived and suited up. In contrast, CBCS brought 10 players to the game and was able to substitute at will throughout both of its games that evening, while the Controllers could rest only at halftime and during time-outs.

With a full complement on the court, the Controllers quickly found their footing. They trailed by just one with 37 seconds before the half, and led by one at the midpoint, 25-24.

Apparently fatigue hit CBCS at the break, because they began to accumulate fouls and didn't score a basket until eight minutes into the second half, by which time the score was 32-26 Controllers.

CBCS narrowed the gap to two, 35-33, with only 14 seconds left on the clock, but a charity shot seven seconds later widened the Controllers's margin to three, 36-33, which was the final score. CBCS amassed 17 fouls in the game -- 13 of them in the second half.

Robert Lawrence logged 13 points for the Controllers and Cedric Franklin had 9; Cedric Street, 7; Elbert Craig, 4; and Kearney, 3. Willie Curry was unable to play because of a bone bruise, and Anthony Smitty was sidelined by an ankle sprain he sustained in a playoff game two days earlier.

Wooten tallied 14 for CBCS; Ross had 5; Simmons, LeMay, Thompson and McLaurin all had 3; and Charlot, 2.

The losses eliminated both the Bobbleheads and the 33rd CBCS from the playoffs.
