After bowling back-to-back perfect games, Chris Young narrowly held on in Game 3 to win the men's nine-pin no-tap tournament at the Tinker Bowling Center by just one pin.

Young bowled a 263 in the third game, for a combined score of 863. David Vardaman, meanwhile, had a perfect 300 in Game 3 but also bowled a 288 in Game 1 and a 274 in Game 2, for a combined total of 862.

Ron Vardaman, David's father, missed a perfect score in Game 2 by just three pins and placed third, with 842; Brent Williams, at 835, came in fourth; and Mike Cumella placed fifth, with 798.

In a nine-pin, no tap game, knocking down nine pins counts the same as a conventional 10-pin strike, bowling center General Manager Brett Moler explained.

The Feb. 18 tournament attracted 28 bowlers, almost twice the number Moler had expected.

Besides the top five, the other contestants were Jason Baer (who bowled a 297 in Game 1), John Griffin (who scored 300 in Game 2), Josh Graver, Arian Lowe, Shawn Lowe, Stephen Kelley, Adam Hall, Mike Farrell, Milo Cotledge, George Maxwell, John Gambill, Nick Fairhurst, Glen Banister, Patrick Super, Michael Disterlic, Mark Johnson, Steven Vardaman, Gerald Davis, Chuck Bullard, William Welker, John Collins, Mike Young and James Giles.

A men's and women's mixed nine-pin no-tap bowling tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 25, starting at 2 p.m.
