Tinker Airman to box in Armed Forces Championship Published Jan. 31, 2012 By Mike W. Ray Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- An enlisted man from Tinker AFB is the Air Force-wide boxing champ in his weight class, and will compete next week against pugilists from other branches of the armed services. Daniel Logan became the All Air Force boxing champ at 165 pounds during competition held last week at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Tinker AFB boxing coach Lavell Sims reported. Logan also won the Distinguished All Air Force boxing award, Sims said. Logan remained in San Antonio this week to train. According to Air Force boxing coach Steven Franco, the training regimen included runs, sprints, plyometrics, jump rope, neck and abdominal exercises, as well as sparring The Tinker Airman is slated to leave Saturday for the Armed Forces Boxing Championships at Camp Pendleton, scheduled Jan. 31 through Feb. 3. While in California, Logan will square off against premier boxers from the Army, Navy and Marine Corps in his weight classification. After that, Sims indicated, Logan will travel to the USA Boxing National Championships at Fort Carson, Colo., Feb. 27 - March 3. The nationals are part of the qualification process for male athletes who dream of competing in the 2012 Olympic Games later this year in London, England. Logan, 21, a senior airman in the 32nd Combat Communications Squadron, said he has been in the Air Force for three years. He said he began boxing about two and a half years ago, after a chance conversation with Pat Griffin, sports director at the Gerrity Sports and Fitness Center. She mentioned Coach Sims and his boxing gym, which at the time he operated in his garage; intrigued, Airman Logan checked it out and, "I loved it." Sims, a boxer and trainer for nearly 20 years, has been the Tinker AFB boxing coach the past eight years. He said he trains 14 amateur boxers, including Logan, and three professional fighters.
