Lizards win two in intramural volleyball Published Oct. 24, 2011 By Brandice J. O'Brien Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- It was the first intramural volleyball match of the afternoon. The league's second-place Leaping Lizards White was up against Fun for All, eighth in the standings. After 15 minutes of warm-up, the teams took to the court at the Gerrity Fitness and Sports Center main gymnasium Oct. 18. Despite a promising start, LL White won both games: 25-22 and 25-7. "Fun For All is a deceptively scrappy bunch," said Patrick Steelman of LL White. "We were hitting the ball really well, but they just kept digging them. They gave us a good fight in the first set, but we wore them down a bit in the second." LL White, with a 12-1 record, came out strong earning six points in the first five minutes. With a fierce skill set and solid communication on the court, few spikes were returned and fewer balls dropped. Yet, Fun was not about to go down without a fight. Though the team's skills and communication was not as tight, their passion and heart made up for what they lacked. Seven minutes into the game, Fun tied the score at seven points. A minute later, they took the lead. It would be the last time they were ahead in the game. LL White came back with a vengeance. After tying the score at eight points apiece, LL White took almost every point possible, making it nearly impossible for Fun to catch up. Down 16-11, Fun tried to catch up and scored two more points bringing the score to 16-13. LL White matched their two points with two of their own, making the score 18-13. With only mere points remaining until the end of the game, Fun tried to break the streak. They got the lead down to one point at 22-21. A volley for the final points ensued, but Fun could not get ahead. Two minutes later, LL White won the game 25-22. Five minutes later, after the teams switched sides, game two began. Fun scored the first point but, within a minute, LL White tied it up. Fun tried to take the lead, scoring another point, but LL White wasn't having it. Two minutes later, they took the lead at 5-3. Fun tried to catch up and scored four more points, but, by then, LL White was already at 10 points and quickly adding more. Ten minutes into the second game, LL White had a 15-7 lead. Fun called a time out. While the break lifted their spirits, it didn't change the course of the game. Within minutes, LL White widened the gap to an 11-point lead at 18-7. Fun couldn't regain their momentum of the first game. Four minutes later, LL White won the game 25-7.
