Hours change at Airman’s Attic

Though the hours of operation at the Airman's Attic are changing next month, the benefit to Tinker's junior enlisted Airmen and Sailors stays the same.

The Airman's Attic is similar to a thrift store in which new and used items -- everything from baby supplies to military uniforms from all branches of service -- are donated. However, instead of using the items for a discounted resale, military personnel in the rank of E-6 and below and their families can shop for no cost at all; everything is completely free.

"The Attic is a critical resource to our young military families as well as singles just starting out," said Rickie Smith, director of the Airman and Family Readiness Center. "The Airman's Attic is a facility where junior enlisted members and their families can go to get free donated goods. All items are free for Airmen who are E-6 and below and there is usually a limit of one bag each month per family."

The items at Airman's Attic are secondhand, but gently used. Some are diamonds in the rough, with the price tags still attached.

The spouses and Airmen who volunteer sort clothing by size and color and organize other things by specific service such as toys, books and household items.

"With the help of the Tinker Enlisted Spouses Network and Airmen from the 32nd Combat Communications Squadron, the Attic was recently reorganized with the goal of getting all donations out onto the floor the same day they are received," Mr. Smith said. "It order to accomplish this, it was necessary for us to change our hours of operation."

Beginning Sept. 1, the Airman's Attic will be open from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

The Attic is located in the Airman and Family Readiness Center, Bldg. 6001. For more information or to donate items, call 739-2747.
