Careless habits cause fire Published July 28, 2011 By Brion Ockenfels Tinker Public Affairs Tinker Air Force Base -- Careless smoking resulted in two fires in the last two days at Tinker AFB. "Both due to carelessness, improper disposal of smoking materials mixed with trash accumulation and poor housekeeping being contributing factors in both cases," said Terry Ford, Tinker Fire and Emergency Service's chief. One incident resulted in the complete destruction of a small $5000 structure. Chief Ford said, "These incidents were totally preventable. Fortunately early detection, reporting and actions by individuals in the vicinity prevented further loss. The current period of high temperatures, dry conditions and high fire danger is not the time to let your guard down." According to the United States Fire Administration, careless smoking accounts for the most deaths of unintentional fires. Extra fire safety precautions will keep yourself and others safe while smoking. Earlier today Tinker's fire department ordered immediate inspections of all designated smoking areas. Building mangers are to ensure areas are clean, butt cans and trash receptacles are emptied, with smoking material fully extinguished by soaking with water prior to disposing in metal dumpsters outside facility. The chief added that smoking materials should never be disposed of in trash cans, on the ground, or floors of smoking shelters. Good housekeeping measures should always be used to prevent trash and debris from accumulating in and around structures, especially designated smoking areas. "Carelessness put our people and mission at risk," said Chief Ford. "Make it a team effort to prevent further occurrences." Questions? Contact the Fire Prevention Office at 734-3981 or 734-3981.
