Tinker Airmen participate in mud run Published June 3, 2011 By Brandice J. O'Brien Staff Writer TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- In between fits of laughter, they reminisced at Bldg. 591 about their Memorial Day weekend activities. On May 28, four 72nd Security Forces Squadron members participated in the "original mud run" in Houston. The team, "Tinker Five-O," competed in a 10K race with 30 obstacles. It took them 1.5 hours, and while they didn't officially place, the team said they are proud of their accomplishments. "Our goal was to not stop through the entire run, and stay together as a team" said Adam Phillips, 26. "There were a lot of people and you could tell they didn't do physical training on a regular basis. We were passing a lot of people at the end." Commencing at 11:30 on a Saturday morning, the team -- three men and one woman -- dressed in matching camouflage shorts and black T-shirts. Three of the four members wore sneakers. Ricky Andrews was the exception and wore combat boots. From the starting point, Tinker Five-O encountered several challenging obstacles including gorilla ropes, which are like rope-made monkey bars, but span 25 feet over a mud pit; a slip-n-slide, and leap of faith, a jump off of an 8-foot plank into the unknown. "It really didn't seem like it was 6.2 miles; it went by really quick," said Andrews, 28. Sarah Autry, 26, agreed. "It was a reason for adults to play in the mud," she said. The team said they didn't do anything other than PT three times a week with the squadron to prepare for the event. But, even that paid off. "A lot of people were walking," Autry said. As the team prepares for the next mud run, they said there were several lessons they took away with them. "Don't open your mouth," said Sean Massey, 25. "And not to wear boots," Andrews added. The team said they plan to participate in the Oct. 29-30 mud run at Dallas-Fort Worth.
