Chaplain discusses ‘purposeful prayer’ at Tinker’s National Prayer Luncheon

TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. --  Capt. Clarence White opened Tinker's 2011 National Prayer Luncheon Feb. 25 by reminding those in attendance that it is appropriate to have this type of event because "we are a nation and a people of prayer."

"Prayer is a gift from God to every person," Captain White said. "Like the prophets of Biblical times our chaplains come to intercede between God and his people, praying for guidance and strength for our base, local and national leaders."

Chaplain (Maj.) Scott Nupson introduced guest speaker Chaplain (Col.) Steven Schaick, the deputy command chaplain of Air Combat Command at Langley Air Force Base, Va.

"He's got a wealth of experience of serving our country as a prior enlisted mechanic on a flight line, and then as God called him and used him in various ways," Chaplain Nupson said.

Colonel Schaick gave up a pilot slot in the Air Force to become a chaplain because he felt God calling him into ministry.

"I don't claim to be an expert on prayer, but I do believe that prayer can be powerful," Colonel Schaick said. "And I believe it has to be done with purpose, and it's best done with purpose."

In his message he emphasized three main points about "purposeful prayer." He said "purposeful prayer helps us think more clearly ... be more truthful and ... be more thankful."

"Purposeful prayer does not change our circumstances as much as it changes us," Colonel Schaick said.

Following his message, Colonel Schaick was presented with a plaque of appreciation from Maj. Gen. David Gillett, commander of the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center.

The Steppin' Out show choir from Chickasha High School and the group's director, David Briscoe, provided musical talent for the event. They sang the national anthem and other musical selections.

Several chaplains assisted in the prayer luncheon as well and were key people at the event. Chaplain (Capt.) Mark Juchter delivered the opening invocation, Chaplain (Cmdr.) Ray Hunt led attendees in a prayer for the nation, Chaplain (1st Lt.) Andy Peck provided a scripture reading and Chaplain (Maj.) Patrick Wedeking gave the benediction.
