O'Brien Staff Writer TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- It was the 552nd against the 552nd Feb. 7 at the Gerrity Fitness and Sports Center gymnasium. And, the 552nd won; the 552nd OSS, that is. The large squadron intramural basketball division's 552nd AMXS and OSS played at 7:30 p.m. and while in the first few minutes it looked like it would be an even game, OSS soon took control. With 6:26 left in the first half, OSS's Vernon Nichols stole the ball, brought it down the court and hit a layup. Two points and a substitution later, and Nichols had the ball again. He repeated his earlier move. OSS led 14-8. Nearly three minutes were left in the first half when OSS scored again. After AMXG missed a pair of free throws and a three-pointer, OSS's Chad Newton hit a three-pointer to put his team up by 11. AMXS scored with just 50 seconds left in the first half. When the half-time buzzer rang, OSS led 19-10. When the game resumed, OSS wasted no time scoring points. In the first seven minutes, OSS scored 12 points, while AMXS tallied six. The score was 31-16 OSS. In the next six minutes, AMXS's Jermie Hunt was fouled shooting a three-pointer. He made one of his three foul shots. Nichols also shot two free throws, one was good. At the second time out of the half, OSS led 36-27. With 1:45 left in the game, Hunt scored two points, but OSS scored five. In the last 14 seconds, Nichols made two free throws. AMXS scored one last basket at the buzzer, but OSS walked off with the 43-31 win. OSS is now 5-3 on the season, while AMXS falls to 1-7.
