TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. --
It would seem the Clarendon College Lady Bulldogs creamed the Tinker Lady Hawks Jan. 25 at the Gerrity Fitness and Sports Center gym. After all, the final score was 113-66 in the Lady Bulldogs' favor. But, Tinker coach Michelle Waggoner tells a different story.
"Overall, Tinker played very well from start to finish," she said. "They had hiccups, but recovered. I couldn't be prouder."
The Clarendon College, a National Junior College Athletic Association Division II school in the Texas panhandle, team likely practices 10 to 20 hours a week, while the Lady Hawks practice only two hours a day, twice a week. Against its peers, Waggoner said the team has a 6-2 record. But, against teams like Clarendon she doesn't include the wins or loses into the Lady Hawks' overall record.
"It's simply an opportunity to move ourselves forward," she said.
It was still a hard game to watch.
Tinker lost the lead within the first three minutes of the game and just couldn't get it back. In addition to Clarendon's skill level, they appeared to be the queens of three-pointers, particularly in the first half. Additionally, Clarendon, which had 10 players on the bench, seemed to switch out players every few minutes.
Tinker only had four players. Coach Waggoner said other players were out due to sickness, injuries or prior engagements.
That's not to say the Lady Hawks didn't try. With every shot Clarendon took, Tinker fought to get the ball back and through the hoop.
By the end of the first 20-minute half, the score was 68-33 Clarendon.
After halftime, Tinker tried to close the gap. It seemed they were on their way, but after two minutes, Clarendon took the ball and ran with it. In five minutes, Tinker managed to score eight points. Clarendon scored nine, making the score 77-43 Clarendon.
Throughout the second half, Tinker had nine free throws at two shots apiece. The team scored 13 points from the shots. But, in the end, it wasn't enough. Clarendon won by 47 points.
