Tinker varsity soccer season ends with playoff loss Published Nov. 23, 2010 By Brandice J. Armstrong Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- If nothing else, the playoff game between Tinker and the Cosmos was interesting. Although it ended Tinker's men's varsity soccer season, it was memorable. On a brisk 46-degree Sunday evening, Nov. 14, Tinker lost 0-2, their second playoff game, at South Lakes Soccer Club in Oklahoma City. But, more so than the score, it was the antics that kept everyone on their toes. When the whistle blew at Field 6, starting the game at 7:09 p.m., the two teams volleyed for control of the ball. Tinker attempted six shots - none of them good. The Cosmos also had six failed attempts. On their seventh shot, they scored, making the score 1-0. When the game resumed, Tinker tried six more times. Despite cheers from the sidelines, Tinker remained scoreless. Glenna Keck, Harold's wife, who offered encouragement or advice; and Andre Tucker yelled, "It's alright, baby, alright," when the ball was taken away or "There you go, baby," when they nabbed the ball. Cosmos, on the other hand, tried twice more. The first attempt was no good, but their second attempt brought the score to 2-0 Cosmos. Before the half-time whistle blew, Cosmos attempted five more goals, but none were good. In the second half neither team scored, but there was plenty of action, including a disagreement and subsequent hostility. After Tinker had attempted 10 goals - one of which, according to Mrs. Keck, missed the goal by an inch -- and changed out most of their lineup, an incident occurred between Tinker's Jeremi Isaac and the Cosmos' goalie. Five minutes after the Cosmos' attempted a goal Isaac dribbled the ball downfield and "accidentally" kicked the ball at the goalie, as he later said. The goalie, in turn, picked up the ball and chucked it at Isaacs, hitting him in the stomach. The goalie was red-carded. Isaac, yellow-carded, and he soon left the field, and later the game. But, the arguing between the two teams continued for four minutes. When they began playing resumed, the tension was obvious and the two teams were colder to one another than the night's air. They shoved one another and said unkind words. Before the final whistled was called, Tinker tried for six more goals and at least two were free kicks. Cosmos attempted one more. In the regular season, Tinker played the Cosmos twice and won both games. Their overall record in the regular season was 3-0-2. Tinker lost both playoff games. The first one had been against IFC, who they had beaten in the regular season.
