McCabe scores late to help Tinker beat No. 1 team Published Oct. 15, 2010 By Brandice J. Armstrong Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Oct. 10 was a good day for Tinker, the men's varsity soccer team. They beat IFC, the No. 1 ranked team in the Central Oklahoma Adult Soccer League, 2-1. Played at Field 2 of South Lakes Soccer Club in Oklahoma City, there was more focus on the impending elements than the game itself. Just before the game began, dark clouds loomed overhead and lightning flashed in the distance. Thunder boomed. In no time, the whistle blew and the two teams volleyed for the ball. IFC ran it up the field and attempted six goals, before Tinker got their feet on it. When Tinker finally got the ball, they brought it downfield and attempted a goal. It was no good. Before they could try again, IFC took control and attempted three goals. One of them was good, bringing the score 1-0 IFC. But, before they could celebrate, Tinker took the ball and attempted two goals. The second, shot by Brian Armstrong, was good. Tinker tied the score at one goal apiece. The remainder of the first half stayed at 1-1. IFC attempted seven more goals and Tinker tried three times. In the second half, the sun shone brightly, but like the light rain and eventual rainbow, it was short lived. When the whistle blew, Tinker wasted no time getting control of the ball. In the first few minutes, they attempted a goal. It was no good, but their second attempt, by Mike McCabe, was, making the score 2-1 Tinker. "It was a great ball by [Armstrong] Ekpete," he said. "I'm just happy I was able to get on it and put it in the back of the net." Tinker held the lead. After McCabe's goal, Tinker tried three more times, none were good. IFC got the ball and attempted three shots, theirs weren't good either. The teams continued to volley for control and points, but the score held steady until the end of the game.
