Lady Hawks ready to play ball Published Oct. 7, 2010 By John Stuart Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- As the days are getting shorter and the nights a bit more chilly, the Tinker Lady Hawks fall season is heating up. Twelve ladies made the team this fall, of 19 who tried out several weeks ago, and coach Michelle Waggoner likes what she sees so far. "We have a very talented group of girls this fall with a great positive attitude," Waggoner said. With three players returning from last year's team, it's a mostly new troupe with a range of experience. Though the team doesn't have an abundance of height, they do have other weapons on the court. "What we lack in height we make up for in quickness and agility," Waggoner said. "We have some strong dribblers who aren't' afraid to drive into the lane and we have some talented three-point shooters. "We are going to make it a habit to play our pace. We want to set the pace and the traps. We want them to follow us. If they're not conditioned to keep pace with us it works out better for us." More than wins, Waggoner is hoping for team cohesion. The team's season opener is Nov. 6-7 at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Due to funding restrictions, the Lady Hawks don't have any home games on the schedule yet. However, they'll be doing several fundraisers in the coming months, hoping for enough profits to afford several games on the home court, Waggoner explained. "I'm hoping for a positive season that the ladies can benefit from," Waggoner said. The team consists of: Shelia Carroll, Peggie Dotson, Velta Firsova, Tinesha Johnson, Bailee Richardson, Alicia Roberts, Kayla Rodriguez, Michele Tate, Krystale Thomas, Patricia Tjin, Katie West and Sarah Trousset.
