Lazy Lizards win sand volleyball tournament Published Sept. 30, 2010 By Brandice J. Armstrong Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- The Lazy Lizards won it all Sept. 25. Pink Pumas and Sand Lot followed with second and third place, respectively. On a picturesque Saturday with temperatures hovering in the 80s, five teams participated in a sand volleyball tournament. Held at the two sand volleyball courts at the 38th Cyber Engineering Group's campus off of Southeast 59th Street, it was a day of camaraderie and sportsmanship, with a bit of unexpected excitement from uninvited guests. "It was a great day full of friendship, volleyball and fun," said Stefanie "Stef" Deitrich of the Pink Pumas. Beginning at 8:45 a.m., the teams played in round-robin fashion. The best two out of three games won the match. In the first two games, the teams played to 21 points, and the first team to reach 21 points with a two-point lead, was deemed the winner. Between games, teams switched sides of the court. If a third game was necessary, the first team to reach 15 points with a two-point lead was named the winner. In most cases, only two games were necessary. Roc 'em Soc 'em and 72nd SFS kicked it off, while Pink Pumas played Lazy Lizards. 72nd SFS and Lizards came out on top. Then, Pumas played Roc 'em; and Lizards competed against Sand Lot. Lizards and Pumas walked away winners. In the third round, Roc 'em played Sand Lot, while Pumas played 72nd SFS. Roc 'em and Pumas won their matches. Shortly before 11 a.m. and prior to the fourth round, an unlucky squirrel met an untimely death when he collided with the power source and zapped the energy supply to the campus. He cut off the power to the radio and participants called around to make sure the gate would still open and close. After generators kicked on and everyone was sure they could still exit the complex, the tournament resumed. The fourth round was cut short, when 72nd SFS, who played Sand Lot, forfeited their match due to an injury. Subsequently, they also forfeited their final match, which would have been against Lizards. As 72nd SFS forfeited, the Lizards beat Roc 'em. The final match, which wrapped just after 12 p.m., was Pumas against Sand Lot. Amid shouts of "nice hit," "nice block," "nice job at the net," and "way to get low," a gopher poked his head out of hole to check out the action. The match ended with the Pumas taking the win. "Thank you to the Gerrity staff for their support and enabling us to hold this tournament," said Danielle "Dani" Spence of the third place Sand Lot.
