Oct. 1 is the day to help out your community. That's the date the 2010 Combined Federal Campaign kicks off, allowing employees to give back.

This year, officials said the Central Oklahoma CFC organization is hoping to raise $3.4 million, with $2 million of that coming from Department of Defense employees, by the Nov. 19 end date.

The annual campaign allows employees to donate to charities of their choice in what is the only DOD sanctioned fund raising campaign.

"Sometimes we live in a bubble and what I'm asking for is awareness," said Tracey Tate, CFC area coordinator. "And even though you might not be affected, others around you might be.

"Food, clothing and donations of your time can also be made if financial gifts aren't possible, especially given our economic climate," Ms. Tate said.

This year's theme is "Find Your Courage, Follow Your Heart," explained Ms. Tate, emphasizing the importance of helping fellow Oklahomans, especially in a time of recession.

CFC-trained volunteers, known as "key workers," are also expected to visit local CFC-supported agencies and relay their findings to the Tinker work force. Agencies include the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, Ronald McDonald House, Oklahoma Children's Cancer Association and Genesis Project.

CFC is open to Tinker military, civilians and central Oklahoma military-affiliated organizations and supports several agencies at the local, state, national and international level. Contributions are dispersed based on a donor's discretion.

Last year, Tinker raised more than $2 million during the campaign, more than $250,000 than the projected goal.

"There are so many other organizations that need a helping hand and I encourage you to support them any way you can," Ms. Tate said.
