VQ-7 shuts out Reserve Gold

You'll want to watch out for the Navy guys. At least if you're their competition in flag football this fall. Such was the case Tuesday for the typically dominant Reserve Gold squad, who got torpedoed 13-0 by an especially salty VQ-7 squadron. And they did it with surprising ease.

From the beginning, things just weren't going well for Reserve Gold. In a first half pockmarked by setbacks, Reserve Gold's Randy Schell threw two interceptions on consecutive drives and turned it over on downs with another two. VQ-7's Janai Holcomb hauled in the first one while Victor Jean claimed the second, as he stole the rock from the hands of Reserve Gold receiver Tom Carter in a flourish of athleticism.

The second interception set VQ-7 for success, as they marched downfield in only four plays. VQ-7's Jeff Lienemann, out of the shotgun, found Holcomb on a 35-yard passing touchdown play, as Holcomb poured on the speed to run away from the Reserve Gold secondary. Kennith Currington secured the extra point reception and it was 7-0 Navy.

VQ-7 dialed in the torpedo tubes again on the very next drive. After a grueling three-way collision of Reserve Gold safeties and VQ-7's Jorge Esparza, Navy tacked another touchdown on the board on an impressive double pass play. Lienemann dumped it to Holcomb at the sideline, who connected with a wide open Jean. The two point attempt was no good but it was 13-0 Navy going into the half.

The second half didn't fare better for Reserve Gold. VQ-7 held on to a conservative game plan and let an imploding Reserve Gold run their course, which meant another interception by Schell and general offensive malaise by the team. Where Schell is typically consistent, it seemed a 100-yard dash competition earlier in the day (that he won) had taken its toll on his performance later in the evening.

It was VQ-7 who flew the victors' colors that day, though Reserve Gold will be back to fight another day.
