Lizards White struggle against AFFSA, keep unblemished record Published Aug. 13, 2010 By John Stuart Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Perhaps the Leapin' Lizards White team thought it was just business as usual. With a bevy of athletic prowess on tap, the team is confident on the court. This much was evident in the first match Tuesday night as they topped their Air Force Flight Standards Agency foes 25-15. But the second was a reptile of a different color, as AFFSA came back with a vengeance, barely losing out 26-24 in a gripping finish. The first match was a mostly one sided affair after just a few minutes of play. At 10:45, it was tied at 6-6, but that's the closest AFFSA would get to victory. The lizards began steadily pulling away, putting it at 10-6 at the 9:30 mark. With consistent play from the Lizards front dynamic duo of lefty Patrick Steelman and David Nguyen, it kept AFFSA scrambling for digs and unable to counter for sideouts. It was 17-10 at the 5:30 mark and they had won it 25-15 with more than a minute on the clock. But something clicked in the second match. It was 6-4 in the Lizards favor at 12:00. But the two point differential is the biggest the match would yield, as the teams tied it up nine times and changed leads seven times throughout the physical row. The Lizards had held the lead until 8:50, when AFFSA went up 11-10. Then the teams held ties at 11, 14, 15, 17, 21, 23 and 24 points, chipping away at each other in one point battles. But the war was yet to be decided. The score was 24-23 in AFFSA's favor when the clock expired, forcing sudden death till either team could win by two points. The Lizards inched back to a 24-24 tie and earned the crucial side out. With possession of the ball they nailed the final two points home, icing the win on a lasered spike by Matt Snyder, past the outstretched hands of AFFSA's Tony Willard.
