Nordiques hook Sharks, slip to tie ending Published June 24, 2010 By John Stuart Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- It was a Jekyll and Hyde showing for the Nordiques. When they were in, they were all in. But with a 3-3 tie with the Sharks June 20, it seemed more a prize catch that got away rather than a draw. If you'd walked out to get a coke at the end of the first period, you might be surprised to see the scoreboard upon returning to your seat. It had been the Sharks leading the way for most of the half, on a goal they put in at minute 10. With blitzing performance at the beginning of the period, Tinker had lagged some in the middle. But as the clock hit the one minute mark, Tinker summoned some formidable flame to set the offensive wood alight. With :35 on the clock Brett Billby took a shot on goal that was deflected by Jeremy Brennan for a goal at the crease. Guttural cheers were voiced by the Tinker faithful, but they knew the period wasn't over. There was work to yet to be done. They'd been pressuring for the last several minutes and wanted to taste shark flesh one more time. Wish granted. With only seconds to spare, forward Clark McClay fed a pass over the middle from the left goal line. Kyle Bostic scooped it up for a quick-wrist shot at the crease. Purchase. The clock read :05 and suddenly it was 2-1. I hope that coke was worth it. The second period dawned as eventfully as the first, with aggressive play on both sides. The Sharks bit first, with a goal at 11:30. They went top shelf past Nordiques goalie Doug Heatherington after a lengthy push on goal. But Tinker answered back with a return blow of their own. With eight minutes on the clock, Bostic slipped the biscuit to Zach Gonyea over the middle. Bostic had drawn the Sharks goalie to the hard right side and Gonyea's shot zoomed into the unguarded left side of the net. But the Sharks wouldn't roll over so easily. With five minutes to play it was Gonyea's tumble on the ice in front of his own net that set up the tie goal. Carrying the puck toward the center line, Gonyea slipped on bad ice to give up the puck -- and a one-on-one scoring opportunity -- to a Sharks forward. It was a draw that could've been a win for Tinker, whose summer roster has been more like a traveling gypsy show than a definitive lineup due to the team's variable TDY schedules. The tie puts the Nordiques summer record at 2-1-2. The Nordiques play again at 3:30 p.m. June 27 against the Warriors at Blazers Ice Center.
