Obermeyer new commander of ‘Ironmen’

Cmdr. Terry Obermeyer took over for Cmdr. Brian McCormick as commanding officer of Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron THREE during an official change of command ceremony held in the squadron's hangar May 6.

Commander Obermeyer takes command as the "Ironmen" Squadron's 41st commanding officer after spending the last 12 months as the VQ-3 executive officer.

"Commander Obermeyer, you are going to be a great CO," said Commander McCormick. "I look forward to watching the squadron continue to shine under your leadership."

The guest speaker for the ceremony was Adm. John C. Harvey, commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command.

"It is very clear to me that this community, this squadron, these sailors, truly represent the best in our Navy," said Admiral Harvey. "Commander Obermeyer, I have no doubt in my mind of this squadron's continued success under your direction."
Commander Obermeyer said he is humbled to be the new skipper.

"Never forget that we are not just another squadron. We hold ourselves to higher standards and always remember Master Chief [VQ-3 Maintenance Master Chief Petty Officer] Matthew Richard's mantra of 'Continued success through the flawless execution of the basics,'" said Commander Obermeyer. "I am humbled to be your skipper. I salute you all and look forward to another great year."

Commander McCormick will now report to United States Strategic Command at Offutt AFB, Neb..

"Commander McCormick you have had an extraordinary impact on VQ-3 and the TACAMO community and you have done so demonstrating exceptional skill and professionalism." said Admiral Harvey. "You have truly set the standard high. Well done!"

The TACAMO community's 16 E-6B Mercury aircraft enable the president of the United States and the secretary of Defense to directly contact submarines, bombers and missile silos, protecting our national security through nuclear deterrence.
