Spectators saw an end to an era Thursday night, whether they knew it or not. As the Football Freaks marched off the field May 6, with the handy 22-0 win over VQ-7, never again would they suit up together. It was a short era to be sure, but the Football Freak magic was over, as surely as they claimed the third place intramural flag football trophy that night.

"One and done," as team captain Billy Casebolt put the season.

But if you looked at how the Freaks' season started and their improvement along the way, it's likely the other teams aren't sad to hear the Freaks won't return in fall league play. The Freaks made an impressive showing in what was both their inaugural and final season, beating the league juggernaut Gym Rats and Reserve White squads in the regular season.

"It feels good to win tonight, considering we started zero and five," Casebolt said. "We just came out to have fun."

If fun means destroying the competition, then they succeeded.

With a dominant first half offensive showing, the game was all but over after two quarters. DJ Wolfe was under center for the Freaks and the opening touchdown came in the first quarter as he connected with receiver James Grace for six points. Dave Alexander caught the two-point conversion pass on the next play. The train had left the station and VQ-7 didn't have a ticket to ride.

And it didn't take long for that train to find the end zone again.

Two drives later the Freaks were prowling at the end zone once more. An interception by Wolfe put them at VQ-7's 20-yard line and hungry for points. Receiver Jerrell Johnson didn't disappoint as he went up for the touchdown reception and came down with six more points. The PAT was no good but the Freaks were owning the game at 14-0.

The Freaks had slapped them, and yet, VQ-7 offered up the other cheek on the very next drive. Only three plays later it was Alexander with the interception that put the Freaks in scoring position from the 50. Working down into the red zone, Wolfe - who was playing with a hurt hamstring - scrambled in for a touchdown. Grace caught the two-point conversion pass on the next play and all of a sudden it was 22-0, where it would stay.

Through a status quo second half the Freaks came away with victory for a third place standing overall and an end to a freaky, standout era.
