Tinker continues trend, wins another doubleheader Published April 29, 2010 By Brandice J. Armstrong Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Tinker did it again. In a doubleheader April 21 at Boomer Sports Complex in Oklahoma City, Tinker beat 30 Stones 15-12 in six innings. Two hours later, they defeated TWP 12-4 in five innings. The two rated "C" teams didn't stand a chance against Tinker's men's varsity softball team, also a "C" team. With hitters like Cody Brooks, Mark Upchurch, Jeramy Thigpen, Brent Nichols and Charles Schumpart up to bat, their opponents didn't have the power to keep up with Tinker. Game one started with back-to-back walks and a sacrifice fly by Will Mitchell, Schumpart and Brooks, respectively. Following Brooks' sacrifice fly, Upchurch hit a double, John Deem hit a single and Thigpen launched a three-run homerun. The inning ended with Tinker up 5-1. Following a scoreless second inning, Schumpart led off the third with a single. Brooks followed with a two-run homerun. With Upchurch on third base after hitting a triple, Deem doubled bring him home and extend Tinker's lead. The Tinker scoring machine kept going with two runs in the fourth inning, followed by four more in the fifth. Mitchell kicked off the fifth inning with a single. Schumpart followed with a triple, scoring Mitchell. Brooks hit a single and Upchurch hit a homerun, but due to the 2-2 homerun rule, it was called an out. No worries. Deem hit a sacrifice fly to score Brooks. After reaching base on a single, Thigpen scored on Nichols' triple. Taylor Lamar also hit a single in the inning. The fifth inning was also big for the Stones. They scored six runs, but it wasn't enough to get ahead of Tinker. The inning ended with Tinker leading 14-11. Both teams scored a run in the sixth inning and the game ended 15-12 in Tinker's favor. The second game was all about Tinker and Brooks was on a roll. Immediately following Mitchell's walk, Brooks hit a two-run homerun. Nine more batters came to the plate, with Mitchell having a second chance at bat before the inning ended. With everyone else hitting singles, Tinker scored seven runs. TWP scored two. Brooks offered an encore performance in the second inning with another homerun. Schumpart and John Deem followed it with singles. Thigpen hit a triple. The inning wrapped with Tinker leading by seven runs, 9-2. The third inning brought out a strand of singles from Tinker and the base team scored three runs. TWP followed with a single run of their own. After a quick fourth inning, in which all three Tinker batters struck out, and TWP scored one run, the game ended.
