Orienteering, sailing classes on schedule at Outdoor Recreation

Adventure is the name of the game at Outdoor Recreation.

An Orienteering Class will be held May 22-23. On May 22, students will meet from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Outdoor Recreation. The group will travel to the Wichita Mountain National Wildlife Refuge from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 23 for the outdoor course.

Cost is $55 per person and includes instruction, transportation, maps and compasses. There is a maximum of eight students and participants must be at least 14 years old. For more information, call 734-5875.

Outdoor Recreation has also scheduled a beginning sailing class for adults 18 and older. The class is offered for those who have never sailed and would like to learn the basics.

Students will learn how to rig and de-rig a sailboat, tack and gibe a small boat, sail upwind and downwind, how to capsize and recover the boat, how to pick a proper life-jacket and the rules of the road. Boaters will sail with a partner so all will learn to steer and crew the boat. Cost is $150. Class meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for five weeks at the Lake Hefner Sailing Center. Class A meets on Tuesdays from April 27 through May 25. Class B meets on Thursdays from April 29 through May 27.

Outdoor Recreation will be hosting a Youth Adventure Camp for kids 8 to 13 this summer. Campers will participate in supervised activities including kayaking, nature hikes, creek walks and other fun outdoor activities. Camp runs from 8 a.m. to noon weekdays and costs $149 per week.
