Base chess tournament set for April 17 Published April 2, 2010 Vanwey Recreation Center TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- The Vanwey Recreation Center will host a base chess tournament at 11 a.m. April 17 at the Vanwey Recreation Center, Bldg. 5905. The tournament is open to active duty Air Force members and their spouses, Department of Defense civilians, contractors, retirees, other eligible family members and youth ages 6 to 18. Youth can sign up at the Tinker Youth Center, Bldg. 5520. Adults can sign up at the Vanwey Recreation Center. The Air Force Chess Tournament will take place at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, May 9-14. This competition is open to active duty Air Force only. All participants must be selected through their major command to participate in the tournament and be a member of the United States Chess Association if they plan on advancing. The Air Force chess team will participate in the inter-service tournament hosted by Naval Station Great Lakes, Great Lakes, IL in August. Denmark will host the NATO inter-service tournament Oct. 17-23. The top two active duty United States Chess Federation rated players from the Tinker tournament will have their names submitted to Air Force Materiel Command. AFMC will select players to participate in the Air Force Tournament. Winners from Tinker must have a signed release from their commander authorizing them to participate in the Air Force tournament and also that they would be available if chosen to represent the Air Force in the inter-services tournaments. Signed releases must be submitted to Dell Armstrong, Vanwey Recreation Center director.
