Tis' the season to "play ball" and that's exactly what Shawn Farber said he wants the Lady Hawks to do. The Lady Hawks, a women's softball team, is a new addition to Tinker's varsity sports' roster.

Comprised of approximately 15 women with a broad range of skill level and experience, the Lady Hawks are out to make a name for themselves.

"This year is a learning experience for everybody and to me, it's to build the team up," said Coach Farber. "As stressful as the military can be, sometimes it's nice to be able to get out there and just have fun."

The slow-pitch "D-rated" team came together March 4 for the first practice at Tinker's Championship Field. Teams are rated "A" through "E," with "A" being the best and most competitive. The women performed drills - fielding and hitting balls - and Coach Farber evaluated their skill level.

"It's different to talk to somebody and then actually watch them in action," said Coach Farber, a sports' fan who is stationed with the Air National Guard near Will Rogers World Airport. He's played softball and coached both intramural and base-level teams for at least 15 years. He said he got involved in the developing team after he'd heard about it at the Gerrity gym, where he works out.

Ranging in age from 19 to 36 years old, the women's experience proved to be equally as diverse. Some women have played fast-pitch with their high-school teams, others played on various Air Force base teams and there are a few women who play infrequently and simply for fun when they do.

But, overall, it was a valuable practice.

"I believe we have the chance to shine this year," said Krystale Thomas of the Lady Hawks. She's been playing on and off for the past 11 years.

Teammate Kadie Mckee agreed.

"I'm sure we will do just fine," she said. Mckee's been playing since she was on an 8-and-under team.

The Lady Hawks will play in local tournaments and local leagues.
