Flight Controllers beat SCW-1 to win intramural championship Published March 5, 2010 By Brandice J. Armstrong Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- The Flight Controllers got game. On March 1, the undefeated team played the Navy's SCW-1 for the intramural basketball championship title, and won 43-30. Ranked No. 1 in the small squadron category, the Flight Controllers met SCW-1, ranked third in the large squadron category, for the first time March 1 at the Gerrity Fitness and Sports Center gym. Traditionally, the Flight Controllers played Tuesday and Thursday nights; whereas, SCW-1 usually played Monday and Wednesday nights. "I didn't know who was going to win," said Pat Griffin, sports director at Gerrity. "All in all, it was a good season with two good teams in the finals. And the Navy's third-place seeding is not indicative of how good they really are." The game began slow as no points were scored until Cedric Street of the Flight Controllers was fouled with 13:24 left in the first half. Making one basket at the free-throw line, the score stayed at 1-0 until SCW-1 scored with 12:25 left in the first half. Showing incredible offense and defense, the score constantly volleyed as one team led the other by one or two points before the other team took control of the scoreboard for a play. The first half ended with SCW-1 in the lead, 13-10. "The first half was slow, but the second half picked it up," Street said. SCW-1 held the lead until Elbert Craig of the Flight Controllers hit a two-point basket with 13:02 left in the second half. SCW-1 never regained the lead. "The other team was well rounded," Street said. "I think they just ran out of gas at the end." With 14 seconds left in the second half, the teams congratulated one another. "Playing back-to-back really hurt us," said Omari Blair of SCW-1. Prior to the championship game, SCW-1 played and beat 966th AACS. "We weren't fresh, we were tired."
