Warriors snap Nordiques streak

If the first two and a half minutes of Sunday's match were indicative of things to come, it was going to be a long game for the Nordiques. And they knew it.

At minute 14:00 in the first period, as the antagonist Warriors squad was claiming their third goal, those exact words floated down the Nordiques' bench: "This is going to be a long game."

Whether clairvoyance or just plain experience, sadly it proved true, and the mighty Nordiques fell 7-1 to the tall, goonish squad Jan. 31, breaking a five-game winning streak.

A long game indeed.

The sole offensive rose among a game of thistles came from Bryson Harley. Coming off a scoring cold streak in the last few games, Harley found the back of the net amid heavy defensive coverage in the second period. It was good form and tight execution from the hash that won the goal, but unfortunately for Tinker -- who was playing without six key players -- the bottle of mojo was in short supply.

The Warriors netted another goal in the second and then put in three more unmatched in the third amid aggressive play on both sides that saw the gloves hit the ice more than once and box time handed out liberally.

In the end the Warriors passing and skating overshadowed Tinker's, Harley said.

"They have the speed and the hands. It was a balanced game, but our passing just wasn't on," he said.

While the Nordiques have stepped up to fill the player vacancies, the absence of six players -- including a whole line of forwards -- is hard to overcome. With several fresh players on deck from other base teams, the Nordiques will have to find their rhythm with a new cast for the next several weeks.

The Nordiques are back on the ice against the Rabbid Yettis Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. at the Arctic Edge Ice Arena in Edmond.
