Guard Dogs bite 72nd CONS in first round of playoffs

TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- If 72nd CONS had all their players at the game, things could've been very different.

Although the 20-6 final score resembles a game that was mostly lopsided, the victorious Guard Dogs would've had their hands full under different circumstances.

"We had a great game and look forward to the rest of the playoffs," said Guard Dogs captain Sean Doll.

And the 'Dogs looked good.

Sporting pink jerseys, the Dogs put two quick touchdowns on the board in the first quarter and it was 12-0 going into the second. Dogs quarterback Larry Mansell connected with Tom Kyles for the first touchdown and then found Henry Pope in the end zone several minutes later.

With only seven players, 72nd CONS struggled to get things going on offense, as they turned it over on downs or punted on all their first-half drives.

But with a roster of playmakers, they still had some standout moments.

Josh Daniels, 72nd CONS, made a late second quarter interception that took away a potential scoring opportunity for his opponents. Then, in the third quarter, teammate Ellis Brown notched an interception of his own.

The Dogs capitalized on a third-quarter error by 72nd CONS, when they turned the ball over deep in their own territory. The Dogs took over possession on the 15-yard line and Mansell found receiver Mark Burney for the touchdown on the next play. With the successful two-point conversion pass to Tom Miles, it was 20-0 at the end of the third quarter.

The teams traded a series of interceptions in the fourth, but 72nd CONS came out with the ball from an interception by Tim MaCarthur.

Then, as time expired before the two-minute warning, with Brown under center, he connected with MaCarthur on a 40-yard pass play to notch their only six points on the board.

The Guard Dogs played the Gym Rats Dec. 3 but results were not available at press time. Playoffs run through this week and conclude Dec. 9.
