552nd MXS drops 552nd MOS, plays for keeps

TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Debatably, he could be the best in the league.

In a league that's more about getting the job done than looking the part, flag football quarterbacks don't always resemble the Heisman form. They just do their job and that's how it is.

But, for 552nd MXS' quarterback, it seems he's got it all, and two bags of chips. This is of course an asset as the flag football playoffs began this week.

If Will Grigsby's 80-yard Nov. 30 touchdown run doesn't impress you, then your standards are too high.

It was the first play of the third quarter and 552nd MXS lead 12-0. Grigsby took the snap and looked for his fleet-footed receiver corps. No dice.

Feeling the blitz he rolled right, then left. And then?

Then he was gone -- up the middle, and on his way to the end zone.

Tack on 80 yards of rushing offense in one play.

"They left the whole middle open. I made a few cuts and the rest was history," Grigsby said nonchalantly. "It was off to the races."

Off to the races indeed. But not just for Grigsby. His whole team is hungry for a championship, evidenced by their handy 26-0 defeat of 552nd MOS in the first round of playoffs.

The 552nd MXS team scored early on a first quarter touchdown by Ashley Holman.

It was all 552nd MXS in the second quarter too, as an interception by Mike Rosenthal put them on their opponent's 20-yard line.

The 552nd MXS scored on the next play, as Holman took a flea flicker pass and connected with Renado Edwards in the end zone.

The final score of the game came with a typical dash of 552nd MXS pizzazz in the fourth quarter. Grigsby connected with Holman over the middle. Holman ran for 20 yards, then pitched back to teammate Joseph Tidwell. Tidwell found the sideline seam and sprinted in for six.

"I was nervous, but my team came out and put a good game together for a win," Grigsby said. "I owe it to my teammates."

The 552nd MXS played the 32nd CCS Wednesday. Game results were not available at press time. The semi-final games will be played Dec. 7 and 8 at 7:30 p.m. and the championship game will be Dec. 9 at 6:30 p.m.
