Tinker fighters head up turnpike for bout Published Nov. 6, 2009 By John Stuart Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- This Saturday is the day for six Tinker All Services Boxing team fighters, as they travel to Tulsa for the Saturday Night Fights and a shot at putting their training to the test. Tinker boxing Coach Lavell Sims is anxious to see how his fighters will perform in the ring as the team will front three new Fort Sill, Okla., fighters alongside three long-time contenders at the Nov. 7 bout. With Coach Sims recently taking over as the boxing coach of the Fort Sill fighters, he's excited about his new team members going head to head at the USA Boxing league bout in Tulsa. Tinker mainstays James Barber (132 pounds, ranked No. 10 nationally), Luke Nelson (152 pounds) and Daniel Logan (165 pounds) will fight on Saturday, joined by Fort Sill fighters Louis Gibb (heavyweight), Michael Baker (178 pounds) and Antonio Christian (165 pounds). The Tinker fighters are coming off a big win at a fight in early October where they earned the best team award. The expectations are lofty for the fighters going into the Tulsa bout, but Coach Sims said his men are ready for what they'll meet in the ring. Saturday's fight will be at the Tulsa Boxing King Street Gym and will begin at 3 p.m. The event is open to the public and will feature between 15 and 25 individual bouts.
