Gym Rats scamper over Panthers Published Oct. 23, 2009 By John Stuart Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- It was full steam ahead Oct. 15 for the Gym Rats flag football team that handily put away the defending league champion Panthers 21-0. The Rats struck early as their kicker booted in the second PAT just after the second quarter started to put them up 14-0. The Panthers (1-1) were stymied by turnovers, as they threw three interceptions, allowing the Rats (3-0) numerous scoring opportunities and the ability to control the clock. Rats players Elbert Craig and George Wiggins were the playmakers on defense, sharing the three interceptions. Rats quarterback Brice Collier was hot throughout the game as he threw for all three of the team's touchdowns. He connected with teammate Ira Anderson early in the first quarter for a 20-yard touchdown pass. Later in the same quarter, Collier found Brian Armstrong with a 60-yard touchdown pass, which put them up by 14. The Panthers bounded back after half-time, as defender Mark Demianovick picked off a pass from Collier in the third quarter. But the Panthers failed to capitalize on the pick and turned possession over on downs. Collier moved his squad downfield at will and connected with receiver Jason Knox for a 25-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter to put the Rats up 21-0. "That's good team ball," Anderson, the Rats team captain, said. "We have some new faces. We're playing well together and we're starting to gel."
