Tinker Boxer James Barber was recently ranked No. 10 by U.S. Boxing Federation in the lightweight classification.

"This is an outstanding for him personally and our Tinker Boxing Club organization," said Lavell Sims, Tinker Boxing Club head coach.

"I have learned to be a better boxer due to my training with Tinker Boxing Club and my experience with the USAF boxing team this past summer," said Barber.

Barber has participated in three smokers at the Gerrity Fitness and Sports Center over the past two years.

Barber said he's privileged and honored to represent Tinker and the Air Force at the national level.

"I would also like to thank my chain of command and everyone that has supported me," he said. Barber will continue his goal of reaching the top prize -- a berth on the U.S. boxing team.

Barber had to overcome several obstacles en route to his current ranking within USA Boxing. He has fought off illness and had to adjust his weight.

"Life is not easy, but it is worth the sweat, tears and work if you want to get to the top," he said.

"I am very proud of him," Sims said. "He has taken every opportunity and he has succeeded. He wants to bring other boxers along with him to the Air Force and national levels." For more information on the Tinker Boxing Club, call Sims at 816-1013.
