Making old new
Mike Phillips, of Sooner Coating, paints the underside of the C-47 “Skytrain” or “Gooney Bird.” When work began last week to repaint all the aircraft at the Charles B. Hall Airpark here, the C-47 was the first project and will be followed by the A-7 and the B-29 to finish 2009. The Gooney Bird was made from 1943-45 by Douglas Aircraft with more than half of the 10,000 planes rolling out from what is now known as Bldg. 3001. The aircraft took part in the invasion of Normandy, and the 65th anniversary of the end of the invasion was Aug. 25. (Air Force photo by Margo Wright)
