Q: On a recent trip to the base exchange, I noticed they are now selling motorcycle jackets that state they are Air Force Instruction 91-207 approved (one of these jackets is solid black). Are these jackets appropriate wear to meet the base requirements? These motorcycle jackets are not cheap and I want to make sure the next one I purchase meets the requirements so I can continue to ride to work. It seems ridiculous that a silver mesh riding jacket designed to improve rider safety is not good enough to wear but a white or orange long-sleeved T-shirt is.

A: Our review of the motorcycle jackets available in the BX which state they are AFI 9-207 approved indicated that there are two different versions available. One version is black with a "break-up" pattern with contrasting colors, and they do meet the AFI requirements. The other jacket is solid black; however, it comes with a stored orange reflective vest that can be hooked on the back and front and which, when used as designed, ensures the jacket complies with both the brightly colored and reflective requirements of the AFI.
