Swingers claim regular season softball title Published July 23, 2009 By John Banks Tinker Public Affairs TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- The juggernauts of the Monday Night League put their softball skills on display with regular season champion title on the line. The Swingers, defending civilian league champions, disposed of the 552nd Maintenance Squadron 20-12 and 15-1 before a packed grandstand at the Tinker Sports Complex Championship Field on July 20. This clash of titans was chock full of swings, hits and runs. The Swingers were the first to get on the scoreboard behind run scoring singles from center fielder Doak Wishon, first baseman Bud Cox and third baseman Jimmy Bland. The Swingers increased their lead to 5-0 in the second with a pair of runs. The bats of the 552nd MXS came alive in their half of the second inning. They scored nine runs to take a 9-5 advantage. Mark Upchurch led the way with a bases-loaded double. The remainder of the game saw the heavy hitting of the Swingers take center stage. Cox, Wishon, and Bland led the hit parade with three home runs and eight RBIs collectively to spearhead the 22-12 win. Upchurch was the hitting star for the 552nd MXS with a line drive three-run home run to cut the deficit, however the Swingers maintained their advantage to get the win. The second game of the doubleheader was a very lopsided affair. The Swingers dominated from the outset, scoring runs in bunches en route to a 15-1 win. They were led by Cox, Wishon and Bland, who drove in 10 runs between them. The win gave the regular season title to the Swingers with a perfect 14-0 record. The loss puts the 552nd MXS in second place with a 10-4 record.
