Annual triathlon set for Aug. 15 Published July 23, 2009 By Becky Pillifant 72nd Force Support Squadron Marketing TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- It's time for Team Tinker to get ready for the XXII annual Triathlon hosted by the Gerrity Fitness and Sports Center. This event, featuring a 400-meter swim, 10K bike ride and 5K run, starts at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 15. "This is a great beginner event for those individuals wishing to do a sprint style triathlon," said Capt. Pete Hudlow, Sustainment Services Flight commander. "For individuals competing in their first triathlon, this is an opportunity that could change the rest of your life." Nick Morrison, 546th Propulsion Maintenance Squadron, is busy getting ready for his first triathlon. He began working out six years ago when he decided to take advantage of Tinker's "Fit for Life" program. Morrison works out daily, taking one day off every nine to 10 days. "I run seven to 10 miles a day, swim 400 meters to one mile, then I do an all around workout with weights," Morrison said, describing his daily routine. Three years ago, he started running marathons and now competes in two or more a year. Morrison said, "I just go out to have a good time and I feel you are not doing the miles if you are not on the road." All base personnel wanting to participate may sign up as individuals or as part of a team. Event divisions are men's open, men's seniors (35 and over), women's open and squadron relay (three person teams) and there is no entry fee. First- through third-place medals will be awarded in each division. Submit entry forms to Brian Armstrong or Mike Dominey only. Participants must have a valid DOD identification card. The first 75 people to register by Aug. 3 will receive a T-shirt. Entries will not be accepted after Aug. 7. For more information, call 734-5607.
