The military spouse is a unique individual. They join the military without having to take an oath, their spouses deploy for months on end and they pack their entire house and move to points unknown. All of this begins by falling in love with someone in the military.

New military spouses can be easily overwhelmed and the Airman and Family Readiness Center is ready to help ease that stress through a program called Heart Link.

"The goal of Heart Link is to strengthen military families through knowledge about military programs, agencies and the mission," said Rickie Smith, A&FRC chief. "This enhances overall mission readiness."

The Heart Link program targets spouses who have been "married to the military" for five years or less. Through the help of "seasoned spouses" -- those who have been around the military for a while -- new spouses get information on topics ranging from customs and courtesies to deciphering the Leave and Earnings statement.

The program uses fun, interactive games that educate the spouses while avoiding the typical military briefings. This also encourages the spouses to interact with each other and build relationships while they learn they are not alone in this journey.

The upcoming Heart Link, set for July 28, will have a tropical theme and attendees can dress the part if they wish. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with the first activity scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Shortly after the first activity,Col. Allen Jamerson, the 72nd Air Base Wing commander, will provide an overview of the broad mission at Tinker. This is the first opportunity for many of the spouses to see all that Tinker is responsible for. The commander will also take time to answer any questions the spouse may have.

"This is a rare opportunity for a military spouse," said Mr. Smith.

Lunchtime will provide attendees the opportunity to share experiences and continue to learn more about their roles as military spouses. This will be a time when spouses can share contact information and start making lasting friendships.

As the day comes to an end, each participant will be presented a graduation certificate and coin by the 72nd ABW commander, who reminds the group of their vital importance to the mission. Child care may be provided for those who need it, but prior arrangements are required. Ask about details when calling to register. Seating is limited and is based on a first-call, first-served basis.
